What are the rule of fifths?

How the rule of fifths works — Why five, what it is actually for, and the one frame where it is not imposed

The rule of fifths is introduced as thirds with more lines, which undersells it. Among the 82 composition overlays it is the one built for the horizon. Its real job is the horizon, and it has one relationship to proportion that thirds does not — worth knowing before you decide which to use.

The construction is four vertical lines at a fifth, two fifths, three fifths and four fifths of the width, and four horizontal lines at the same fractions of the height. Eight lines, sixteen intersections, and no line through the centre — which is the first thing that distinguishes it from a quadrant or centre-cross grid.

That absence matters. Because five is odd, the fifths straddle the middle rather than landing on it: the two central lines sit at 0.4 and 0.6, leaving the exact centre in an unmarked band. A composition placed on this grid cannot accidentally centre itself, which is the same property thirds has and a quartered grid does not.

Thirds asks where the subject goes. Fifths asks where the horizon goes, and then where the subject goes.

The horizon is the real use

In landscape work the single most consequential decision is how much of the frame is sky. The rule of thirds overlay tool offers two positions — a third from the top or a third from the bottom — and both are moderate. Fifths offers one fifth and four fifths, which are decisive: a horizon a fifth from the top is a picture about the ground, and a fifth from the bottom is a picture about the sky.

Finer divisions place a line nearer the edge than thirds can manage. That is its entire use: where the subject is small and the surrounding space does the work, thirds land too far in.

It also offers the moderate positions as well, at two fifths and three fifths, which bracket the thirds. So a fifths grid gives you four horizon choices where thirds gives two, running from decisive through moderate — and having them all on screen at once makes choosing between them a comparison rather than a guess.

This is why the rule of fifths turns up in cinematography and landscape rather than in portraiture. It is a grid about the division of a frame into bands, and it is at its least useful when the subject is a single object with no horizon in the picture at all.

Sixteen points, and what to do with them

Four intersections is enough for one subject and awkward for two: put a second element on a second thirds point and the two dominate the frame equally, which is rarely what a picture with a clear subject wants. Sixteen gives you a hierarchy: the subject on one of the four outer crossings, a secondary element on an inner one, and the relationship reads as subordinate rather than as competing.

The trap is treating all sixteen as equal. They are not, and the grid does not tell you which matter. As a rough guide the four crossings at one fifth and four fifths behave like the thirds intersections do — strong, off-centre, load-bearing — while the inner twelve are for support. Using more than three or four in a single picture produces the same problem the armature has: everything is near something.

The one frame where fifths are not imposed

Every composition grid is either produced by the frame's proportion or laid onto it. Thirds is laid on; so is fifths, on almost every frame. The exception is the double square: a 1:2 rectangle's reciprocal armature puts its eyes at exactly one fifth of each side.

On a 3:2 photograph it is imposed, and honestly so. That is not a criticism: an imposed grid that produces good pictures is a good grid. It is simply worth knowing which kind you are using, because it changes what you can claim about why it works.

Against thirds

The practical difference is resolution rather than philosophy. Thirds is faster, has fewer options, and is easier to hold in your head in a viewfinder. Fifths is slower, offers four horizon positions instead of two, and gives somewhere to put the second thing.

For a single subject with no horizon, thirds is usually enough and the extra lines are clutter. For a landscape, a wide interior, a group, or anything where the frame divides into bands, fifths earns the extra lines. Neither is more correct; they answer different questions about the same frame.

Practical notes

Turn the dots off while judging and on while placing. Eight lines with sixteen dots is a lot of ink, and as a judging overlay the lines alone are enough to see whether something is on or off. The dots are for the moment you are deciding where to move it to.

And use the eyedropper. A fifths grid at full opacity over a landscape reads as a cage, which makes it hard to see the picture you are judging. Sample a mid-tone from the image and the grid sits behind the photograph rather than in front of it, which is the only way an eight-line overlay stays usable.

The version cinematographers actually use

In moving image the fifths grid appears in a reduced form: the horizontal lines only, and in many shots just two of them. The reason is that a shot's vertical divisions matter far more than its horizontal ones, because the frame moves sideways across a scene and the horizon does not move with it.

So a common working practice is to set the horizon at one fifth or four fifths and ignore the vertical lines entirely, letting the subject find its own place along the band. That is a legitimate use of the grid and a good argument for turning the intersection dots off — sixteen points invite you to use them, and this way of working needs two lines.

It also survives the aspect ratios moving image uses. On a 2.39:1 frame a thirds grid is nearly useless because the horizontal thirds are enormously far apart, while the fifths still divide the height usefully. The wider the frame, the more the horizontal divisions are the ones doing the work.

One more argument for the grid, which applies to any frame with people in it: sixteen points give you somewhere to put eyes. A face placed on a thirds intersection puts the head there, and the eyes — which is what a viewer actually looks at — end up above it. A fifths grid has a line close enough to catch them, which is a small thing that resolves a great many portraits.

Should I show the sixteen dots?

Only while placing. Sixteen dots on top of eight lines is a lot of overlay, and the dots earn their place at the moment you are deciding which crossing a subject sits on. Turn them off to judge the result.

How do I stop eight lines swamping the photograph?

Drop the opacity well below the 60% default — a fifths grid has twice the line of a thirds grid and wants to be correspondingly fainter. Auto-contrast picks a colour that separates from the image, which matters more here than on a sparser overlay.

Can I print it as a viewfinder or cropping guide?

Yes, at any paper format up to A2. Printed on acetate and laid over a contact sheet it is a fast way to compare crops across a set of frames, which is awkward to do on screen one picture at a time.

Which export do I use over a photograph in an editor?
