What is a comic panel layout?
The comic page grid is a free browser tool that draws a page of panels, 1 to 6 columns by 1 to 8 rows. The page margin and panel gutter are adjustable, the panels are numbered, and a safe area is optional. It draws over your own thumbnail or artwork, exports SVG and raster to 600 DPI, and never uploads anything.

What the Comic Page Grid Generator does

Matching gutters
Margin and gutter are both percentages of the page's short side, so a horizontal gutter and a vertical one are physically the same. Gutters that differ between the two axes read as an error even when the grid is regular.
Numbered in reading order
Left to right, top to bottom. Numbering is what lets a script, a letterer and an artist all refer to panel four and mean the same panel — which on a twenty-page issue is not a small thing.
A safe area, at half the margin
Drawn at half the page margin, so it sits outside the panel area rather than inside it. That is the trim allowance — the zone a printed page may lose — and it is why the panels are inset in the first place.
Something to break
A page that merges two cells into a wide panel reads as emphatic precisely because the rest of the page is regular. Without an underlying grid there is nothing to depart from and the irregularity reads as accident.
Over your own thumbnail
Lay it over a rough and see whether the panels you drew actually sit on a grid or merely near one. Panels a gutter's width out of alignment are the most common and least visible problem on a finished page.

How a comic panel layout works — The page grid: what the gutter does, and why the nine-panel keeps coming back
Comics are the only medium where the space between the pictures is a formal element with a name, which makes this the one of the 82 composition overlays whose gutter carries meaning rather than just separation. Everything a page grid does comes back to that space, and to the fact that the reader crosses it without being told to.
A comics page is a set of panels separated by gutters. The panels carry moments; the gutter is where the reader supplies what happened in between. Scott McCloud's term for that supplying is closure, and it is the operation the whole medium runs on.
Which makes the gutter width a real narrative control rather than a spacing preference. A narrow gutter compresses the gap the reader has to bridge, so the moments feel close together — continuous action, a beat rather than a cut.
A wide gutter opens it, and the reader does more work per transition. That reads as elapsed time, as a change of scene, or simply as a slower page, and a sequence that needs to feel unhurried is often just a sequence with more space between its panels.
Gutter width, margins and the safe area
The overlay measures the gutter as a percentage of the page's short side and applies the same value in both directions, which matters more than it sounds. If horizontal and vertical gutters differ, the panels stop reading as a family — a wide gap one way and a narrow one the other looks like a mistake even on a perfectly regular grid.
The page margin works the same way, and it exists for a physical reason. A printed page is trimmed after binding, and the trim has a tolerance, so a panel running to the paper's edge risks losing a strip of itself.
The safe area drawn here sits at half the page margin, which puts it outside the panel area rather than inside it. That is the trim allowance made visible: panels inside the margin, and the margin itself inside the safe rectangle.
The exception is a deliberate bleed, where art is drawn past the trim line precisely so that no white edge can appear. That is a different intention and the grid does not stop you — but it is worth being clear which one you are doing, because a panel that bleeds by accident is a panel that gets clipped.
The nine-panel grid
The nine-panel grid — three columns by three rows — is the most argued-about layout in comics and it keeps returning for a structural reason. Nine panels is enough to hold a scene, the three-by-three arrangement gives a page a strong regular rhythm, and the divisions permit halves, thirds and full-width rows without anything landing off-grid.

The comic panel overlay page works through the drawn examples, beside the rest of the design template overlays. Its best-known modern use is Watchmen, where Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore held the nine-panel grid across the whole book and used every departure from it as an event. That is the argument for regularity in its strongest form: the grid is a baseline, and the baseline is what makes an interruption mean something.
Before that it was simply the standard. Golden-age and silver-age American comics used regular grids as a production convenience, and the six-panel page — two columns, three rows — was probably the most common layout in the history of the medium.
Manga, and the limits of this overlay
Manga developed differently, with far more irregular panel shapes, diagonal gutters and panels that overlap or break their borders. The right-to-left reading order changes the geometry of the page as well, and a grid designed for left-to-right reading will number panels the wrong way for it.
That is a real limitation of this overlay and worth stating: the numbering runs left to right, top to bottom. For manga-order work the panel positions are still correct; the numbers are not, and they can be turned off.
The counting matters for a practical reason that has nothing to do with layout. A script refers to panels by number, a letterer places balloons by number, an editor gives notes by number, and on a twenty-page issue with several people involved, agreeing which panel is panel four is the difference between a smooth job and a confusing one.
The grid as a planning device
The regular grid's other function is as a planning device. Thumbnailing a page on a regular grid first, then merging cells for the panels that need more room, produces a layout where the irregularities are decisions. Thumbnailing freehand produces one where they are whatever fitted.
That distinction shows up in the finished page as a specific quality: pages composed by merging a grid feel deliberate even when they are wildly irregular, and pages composed by feel often feel crowded in the middle and empty at the bottom.
Reading flow
Reading flow is the constraint everything else serves. Western comics read left to right and top to bottom, and the layout must not create ambiguity about which panel comes next. The classic failure is a page where two panels of different heights sit side by side and the reader cannot tell whether to go across or down.
A regular underlying grid prevents that almost automatically, because rows are unambiguous. The moment you merge cells vertically you have created the possibility of the failure, and that is the moment to check the flow explicitly rather than assume it.
Panel count as pacing
Panel count per page is a pacing decision more than a layout one. More panels means more moments and a slower read; fewer means bigger images and faster movement. A six-panel page and a three-panel page covering the same story beats feel entirely different.
The extremes are worth naming. A single panel filling the page is a splash, used for arrival, revelation or scale. A double-page spread is the same device at twice the size, and it has a constraint the grid cannot show: the gutter of the binding runs down its middle, so nothing important can sit there.
For film and animation the same sequence problem belongs to the storyboard template generator, and the page's own type sits on the baseline grid generator. For webcomics the physical constraints mostly disappear — no trim, no binding, often no fixed page height — and the grid becomes purely compositional. The vertical-scroll format in particular has developed its own conventions where the gutter's length, rather than its width, controls pacing.
The overlay's maximum of six by eight is well beyond anything a page should carry. It is there so that the working settings sit comfortably inside the range rather than at the end of a slider, which is a small usability point that matters when you are adjusting rather than choosing.
The grid draws over your own thumbnail rather than exporting a fixed template because checking is the more valuable use. A blank panel template is a printable and printables are plentiful; the same grid over your rough tells you whether your panels are aligned or merely close.
The export sizes itself from the paper format and the DPI you choose rather than from your screen, so a page printed at your actual board size has accurate panel positions. SVG keeps every panel editable as a template layer.
Everything runs in your browser. Images you load are never uploaded, because there is no server for them to reach. The drawing, the transform and the export all happen on your own machine.

Export and print
What do I export to draw the page on paper?
The grid alone, at the trim size you work at, printed at 600 DPI — you get the panel borders and the safe area ruled and nothing else, which is the half hour of ruler work at the start of every page. Print it on the board itself if your printer will take the stock, or on a light-box sheet if not.
Can I get the panels into Clip Studio or Procreate?
Export SVG for Clip Studio and the transparent grid-only PNG for Procreate. The first arrives as snappable paths, the second as a layer above the canvas. Either way keep the panel numbers on — they survive the export and save renumbering later.
Choosing a grid
Should I use this or the storyboard grid?
This for a printed page, the storyboard frame generator for shots. A comic page is one composition made of panels with variable gutters and a trim to respect; a storyboard is a sequence of identical frames at a fixed aspect ratio. They look similar and answer different questions.
Is a downloaded page template not simpler?
Until you want a different panel count, which is every other page. A template gives you one arrangement; this gives you 1–6 columns by 1–8 rows with your own margin and gutter, at your trim size, in about five seconds.
Practical matters
Does anything I load get uploaded?
No. There is no server to upload to. The image is read by your browser, the grid is drawn on your machine, and the export is generated locally.
Does it handle manga's right-to-left reading?
The grid is symmetrical, so the panels are the same either way — what changes is the reading order you draw into them, and the panel numbers here run left to right. Number them yourself if you are working right-to-left rather than trusting the labels.
Can I use pages made with it for a book I sell?
Yes. A panel grid is not a licensable asset, the exports carry no watermark, and the terms leave the artwork entirely yours. Check your printer's own bleed and trim requirements against the safe area before you commit a whole book.
