Introducing AR tracing to a class: trace once, then redraw
A single-session lesson that treats AR tracing as a study tool, not a shortcut. Students talk honestly about when tracing helps and when it hurts, run one guided trace with a phone locking a reference over their real paper, then put the phone away and redraw the same subject from memory — so the trace becomes something their eye learned, not something they leaned on.
What AR tracing is (and what it is not)
Grid Maker Pro is a free browser tool that puts all 82 composition overlays on top of a reference image on any device — free forever, and private, because there is no server the image is ever sent to. AR tracing is a separate capability that a browser physically cannot do: a phone app that uses the camera to lock a reference image over the student's real paper, so they hand-draw the proportions on the actual page. This lesson uses the free web tool for the discussion and the redraw, and needs only one phone per small group for the guided AR trace. No purchase is required to teach it: the app's free tier includes three AR traces of the student's own photo each month plus all 82 grids, which is plenty for one classroom demo.

Materials
- One internet-connected device per student or pair to open the free web tool for the discussion and reference viewing
- At least one phone per small group with the Grid Maker Pro AR app installed (Android; iOS planned) — the free tier is enough for the demo
- A simple phone stand, book, or binder to angle the phone over the paper hands-free
- Plain drawing paper, pencils, and erasers per student
- One shared, forgiving reference per group — a leaf, a mug, or a simple portrait works better than a busy photo
Lesson sequence
Trace once, then redraw from memory
50 minutesAsk the room a real question: "Is tracing cheating?" Let the argument run for a minute before steering it. The honest answer, as covered in is tracing cheating, is that it depends on what you do next. Tracing to skip learning is a crutch. Tracing once to feel where the eyes actually sit on a head, then drawing it yourself, is how many working artists study a hard subject. Name the plan out loud: today we trace once, on purpose, then we put the phone away and draw it again from memory.
- (4 min) Groups pick one shared reference and open it. Prop the phone on a stand so it hangs steady over the paper, camera pointed down at the page.
- (4 min) Open the AR trace, calibrate to the paper, and lock the reference over the page. Point out that the app never uploads the photo — the whole trace runs on the device, the same privacy promise the free web tool keeps.
- (8 min) Students hand-draw the main shapes they see through the phone: the outline, the biggest interior divisions, and two or three landmarks. This is not colouring in — it is a slow look at where each line truly falls.
- (2 min) Stop, remove the phone, and look at the traced drawing on its own. Ask each student to name one proportion that surprised them — something wider, higher, or closer together than they expected.
- (2 min) Phones go face down and out of reach. Fresh sheet of paper for everyone.
- (8 min) Students redraw the same subject freehand, from memory. They are told the goal is not a prettier drawing — it is to carry the proportions the trace showed them onto a page with no guide.
- (2 min) Set the two drawings side by side. Where did the freehand version hold the proportion the trace taught, and where did it slide back to a guess?
- What did the trace show you that you would have gotten wrong by guessing?
- Did any of that carry into your freehand redraw? Point to the exact spot.
- When would tracing stop helping you and start doing your thinking for you?

Extensions
- Two traces, then memory: Advanced students trace the same subject from two angles before the freehand redraw, so memory has to reconcile two views rather than copy one.
- Grid instead of AR: Repeat the arc with the free web tool's rule-of-thirds overlay to show that a grid on screen and an AR lock on paper teach the same seeing, by different roads.
- Differentiation: Younger students trace a single simple object and redraw only its outline; older students trace a portrait and are held to the eye line and jaw in the redraw.
- Discussion: Read is tracing cheating together and have students write a one-paragraph class policy on when tracing is allowed in their own sketchbooks.
