What is an Instagram grid splitter?
An Instagram grid splitter divides one image into tiles that reassemble into the whole picture when they are posted to a profile. Because the profile grid is three columns wide, the split is always three across, with as many rows as you want. Crop to the grid shape before you split
The profile grid is square tiles three across, so a 3×3 grid needs a square source and a 3×2 needs a 3:2 landscape. Splitting an image whose shape does not match the grid gives tiles that are not square, and Instagram will crop them again on the way in.

What the Instagram Grid Splitter does
Three columns, always
The profile grid has been three across for the whole life of the app. A splitter offering four or five columns is offering something the feed cannot display, so the column count is fixed and the row count is the real choice.
Cut around the gutters, not through them
A profile lays a hairline of page between thumbnails, and it covers picture. Parts cut edge to edge are put back together with a strip missing at every seam, so a line that crossed the join no longer meets. The gap is taken out of the frame before the cuts fall. Set it to zero and the parts butt together exactly, for anything that is not going onto a profile.
Posting order is the trap
Every tile is numbered in reading order, which is the order they appear on the profile — and therefore the reverse of the order they must be uploaded in. Getting this backwards is the single commonest way a grid post fails.
Lossless PNG
Instagram recompresses everything it receives. Handing it a JPEG that has already been recompressed by the splitter means two rounds of loss, and the artefacts land hardest exactly on the seams where the tiles meet.

How an Instagram grid splitter works — How the profile grid works, and what a split has to respect
A grid post is a single image displayed as several — the same division the 82 composition overlays draw on screen, applied to a feed — and it only holds together if the split matches the way the profile lays tiles out. Almost every failure comes from one of three things: the wrong source shape, the wrong posting order, or tiles that are too small.
The grid is three wide, and that fixes almost everything
Instagram's profile view has shown three tiles per row since the beginning, and that single constraint determines the whole exercise. A split is always three columns; the only real decision is how many rows deep the image runs.

Three by one gives a panorama across the top of the profile — the cheapest version, and the one that survives longest before new posts push it down. Three by two is a six-tile block. Three by three is the classic nine-tile grid, and anything deeper is a continuing pattern rather than a single image.
Source shape decides tile shape
Profile tiles are square. If the source image is square and split three by three, each tile is square and nothing is cropped. If the source is 3:2 landscape and split three by two, each tile is again square.
The rule is that the source aspect ratio should equal the column count divided by the row count. Three columns by three rows wants a 1:1 source; three by two wants 3:2; three by one wants 3:1. Feed anything else in and the tiles are rectangular, and Instagram will centre-crop them to square on upload — cutting exactly the parts of the image the split was supposed to preserve.
This is why cropping before splitting is the first step rather than an afterthought. It is also why an aspect ratio calculator is genuinely useful here: working out what a 4,000 by 3,000 photograph needs to become for a 3×3 grid is a two-second calculation that saves a ruined post.
Posting order, and why it is backwards
A profile shows the newest post first, at the top left, and pushes older posts right and down. That means the tile which should end up top left has to be posted last, and the tile that ends up bottom right has to be posted first.
For a nine-tile grid numbered one to nine in reading order, the upload sequence is nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. Getting this wrong produces a mirrored, scrambled version of the image, and there is no way to reorder posts after the fact — the only fix is to delete and start again.
The related practical point is that the whole set has to go up in one session. A grid half-posted is a profile of disconnected fragments, and anything posted in between breaks the block permanently.
Tile resolution, and how small is too small
Instagram displays profile thumbnails small but stores and serves a larger version when a post is opened. A tile that is only a few hundred pixels across looks acceptable in the grid and soft the moment anyone taps it.
A reasonable floor is around 1,080 pixels per tile, which is Instagram's long-standing display width for a single post. For a 3×3 grid that means a source image of about 3,240 pixels square. Below that the grid still works, but individual posts look degraded.
The preview here reports each tile's saved dimensions for exactly this reason. It is easier to notice the problem before downloading nine files than after posting three of them.
Why lossless output matters more here than usual
Instagram recompresses every image it receives, and there is nothing to be done about that. What can be avoided is compressing twice.
For a cut that is not three across the image splitter takes any counts, and the photo grid maker does the inverse. The rectangular grid overlay is the same division drawn rather than cut, one of the plain drawing grids. If the splitter writes JPEGs, the tiles are recompressed once on the way out and again by Instagram. Compression artefacts are worst at high-contrast edges, and a tile boundary is the highest-contrast edge in the set — which is why doubly-compressed grid posts often show a visible seam that was not in the original.
PNG output avoids the first round entirely. The files are larger, which does not matter because they are uploaded once and discarded.
Grid posts against carousels
A carousel puts several images inside one post, swiped horizontally. A grid post puts one image across several posts, assembled on the profile. They look similar in a planning tool and behave completely differently.
A carousel is safe: it stays together, it can be edited, and it does not constrain what you post next. A grid post is a commitment — it occupies a fixed block of the profile, it breaks if anything is posted out of sequence, and it slowly slides down and off as new posts arrive.
The honest advice is that grid posts work best as an occasional deliberate device — an announcement, a launch, a portfolio header — rather than as a running format. The maintenance cost of keeping a profile grid intact is higher than most accounts expect.
Where the tiles come from matters too
Splitting works best on images with something happening across the whole frame: a landscape, a pattern, a large piece of typography. Images with a single central subject split badly, because the middle tile carries everything and the other eight are background.
It is also worth looking at each tile on its own before posting. Every tile is a post, and it will appear in feeds individually, out of context, before anyone sees the assembled grid. A tile that is an ambiguous crop of a corner is a poor post even if the finished grid is good.
Reviewing the tiles individually before the first upload takes a minute and catches the two problems that cannot be fixed afterwards: a tile that is too soft to post, and a tile that reads as a meaningless crop on its own.

How big should the source be?
Big enough that each tile is at least 1080px on its short side after the cut, which for a 3 × 3 means something around 3240px wide. Under that the platform's own re-encoding has less to work with and the tiles soften noticeably.

Why PNG rather than JPEG?
Instagram recompresses everything it receives. Writing JPEG here would mean two rounds of compression, and the artefacts land hardest on high-contrast edges — which is exactly where the tile boundaries are. PNG avoids the first round.
Can I get the tiles as a single sheet to check first?
Export the composite with the split lines drawn on the whole image. Looking at where the cuts fall before you commit is worth the extra step — a cut through a face is much more obvious on the assembled sheet than in nine separate files.
Why PNG rather than JPEG for the tiles?
Because the source is almost always already a JPEG, and re-compressing it into nine more JPEGs adds a second generation of loss before the platform adds its own. PNG tiles cost more to upload and arrive at the re-encoder clean.
