What is the Fruit of Life?
The Fruit of Life generator is a free browser tool that draws thirteen circles arranged on a hexagonal lattice, over any image or blank canvas. One sits at the centre, six around it, and six more in a second ring. A single toggle joins every pair of centres to each other: thirteen points taken two at a time gives exactly 78 lines, and that figure is Metatron's Cube. How the Fruit of Life works — Why thirteen, why seventy-eight, and what the figure actually contains
The Fruit of Life is presented as a mystical object and is more interesting as a combinatorial one. Of the 82 composition overlays it is the one whose two numbers, thirteen and seventy-eight, each have an exact reason. Thirteen circles and seventy-eight lines are both exact numbers with exact reasons, and the relationship between this figure and Metatron's Cube is a definition rather than an interpretation.
Start with one circle. Surround it with six more, centres on a hexagonal lattice — that is the arrangement a compass produces naturally, since a circle's radius steps around its own circumference six times. Add a second ring of six on the same lattice and you have thirteen.
Thirteen is where the count stops for a reason that is structural rather than symbolic: it is the smallest arrangement in which every circle of the first ring is itself completely surrounded. Go further and you get a larger patch of the same lattice with nothing new in it. Stop earlier and the figure is incomplete in a way you can see.
Thirteen circles is not a mystical number. It is the point at which the pattern has said everything it is going to say.
Seventy-eight is a calculation, not a claim
Join every centre to every other centre. Thirteen points taken two at a time is thirteen times twelve over two — 78. That is the complete graph on thirteen vertices, and it is exactly what the figure called Metatron's Cube is: the Fruit of Life with all its centres joined.

So the relationship between the two figures is a definition. The Fruit of Life is the circles; Metatron's Cube is the circles plus the 78 lines. Anyone describing them as separate traditions or as different discoveries has lost the thread — one is the other with a step performed.
The count is worth carrying because it is checkable. If a drawing you are shown has a different number of lines, it is either incomplete or it has added lines that are not chords of the thirteen centres, and either way it is not the figure it claims to be.
What is genuinely in the line figure
The claim in circulation is that all five Platonic solids are readable out of Metatron's Cube. That is partly true and worth stating precisely: the 78 lines do contain two-dimensional projections of the tetrahedron, cube and octahedron quite directly, because those solids project onto the hexagonal lattice the centres sit on.
The dodecahedron and icosahedron are the contested pair. They are five-fold solids, and the figure has no five-fold symmetry anywhere — its whole structure is six-fold. Diagrams that extract them do so by selecting sub-sets of lines and adding others that are not chords of the thirteen centres. It is a construction laid over the figure rather than one found inside it.
None of which makes the figure less worth drawing. A complete graph on a hexagonal lattice is a genuinely beautiful object with a great deal of structure in it — the point is only that the structure it has is six-fold, and claims requiring five-fold symmetry are claims about a different figure.
The circles are separated on purpose
The centres are stepped at a little over two radii rather than exactly two, so neighbouring circles sit just clear instead of touching. That is a legibility decision. Tangent circles read as a single merged outline at small sizes, and this is a figure whose whole content is a count — thirteen has to be countable.
It also distinguishes this figure from what the Egg of Life generator draws, whose seven circles are placed at exactly two radii, and from the line set the Metatron's cube generator lays over these same centres and therefore do touch, and from the Seed of Life, whose seven circles are placed at one radius and overlap heavily. Three figures, three spacings, three quite different objects, and the spacing is the whole difference.
Working with the line figure
For anything printed or cut, decide early whether you want the circles, the lines or both, because they want different treatments. The circles are an outline drawing and survive at almost any weight. The 78 lines are a dense field, and at full opacity over a small area they fill in solid — which is why the overlay drops their opacity rather than leaving that to you to discover.
For cutting, export SVG and take the lines alone. Seventy-eight straight paths cut cleanly; thirteen circles cut cleanly; the two together produce a large number of tiny closed regions that will fall out of the work. That is the practical reason most physical Metatron's Cubes are the line figure only.
And for teaching, use the construction step. Centre, first ring, second ring, then the lines — watching 78 chords appear across thirteen points is the moment the figure stops being decorative and becomes arithmetic, which is the more durable understanding.
Choosing a radius that survives the process
The circle radius control sets everything, and the useful way to choose it is backwards from your output. Thirteen circles at a fraction over two radii apart means the whole figure spans a little over four diameters across, so a figure that must fit a 100mm blank has circles of about 12mm radius and lines crossing at every scale between.
That matters because the 78 lines are not evenly distributed. Near the centre they crowd — the middle circle has twelve chords passing through its immediate neighbourhood — while near the rim they fan out. If your process has a minimum feature size, the centre is where you will hit it first, and it is worth checking there rather than at the edge where everything looks comfortable.
For screen work none of this applies and you can push the radius as small as you like. For anything cut, etched, fired or engraved, set the radius from the centre outward and let the overall size land where it lands. Where the Fruit of Life gets used

It is the commonest request I get after the merkaba, and the freehand versions always have the wrong number of lines. Having 78 by construction is the difference between the figure and an impression of it.
