Why transferring a drawing to canvas deserves care
There is a specific frustration in painting that has nothing to do with paint. You spend hours on a drawing — a portrait study, a composition sketch, a piece of lettering — you get it exactly right, and then you have to move it onto a canvas that is three or four times the size. Redraw it freehand and it comes out subtly wrong: the proportions you fought for have quietly shifted. The transfer stage is where good drawings go to die, and it is entirely avoidable.

Why it works
You divide the drawing into a grid of squares, then divide the canvas into a grid with the same number of squares — but larger. You copy the design one cell at a time, drawing only the small piece of contour that falls inside the square you are on. Squaring up, step by step

Choosing cell size
Finer grids give more accuracy but slow you down; coarse grids are fast but leave you guessing inside large cells. Commercial transfer paper
Graphite transfer paper is a thin sheet coated on one side with a releasable graphite layer. You lay it graphite-side down on the canvas, place your drawing (or a print of it) on top, and trace the contours firmly with a stylus or a hard pencil. The pressure offsets graphite onto the canvas, leaving a light outline you then paint over. The home-made version
You can make your own transfer sheet. Scribble soft graphite — a 4B or 6B pencil, or a stick of graphite — heavily over the back of a copy of your drawing, then lay it face-up on the canvas and trace the front. The graphite on the back offsets under the stylus. It is messier than a commercial sheet but free, and for a single canvas it works perfectly well.
The honest limit
Transfer paper is locked to the size of the drawing on top of it — it copies, it does not enlarge. The persistent flaw
Projection has one standing weakness: keystone distortion. Unless the lens is perfectly perpendicular to the canvas and centred, the projected rectangle skews into a trapezoid — wider at the top than the bottom, or tilted — and any drawing you trace comes out subtly stretched. Tracing on a light table (small canvases)
A light table is the most accurate tracing tool there is, with one condition that limits it sharply on canvas: light has to pass through the surface on top. It is a flat panel that glows evenly from behind. You tape your drawing to the glass, tape a thin surface over it, and the backlight makes the drawing's lines visible straight through so you trace them directly.
Why it is so accurate — and where it stops
Because the drawing and the surface share the same plane and the same scale, there is nothing to misjudge — no keystone, no lens softness, no ratio. What you trace is exactly what is underneath. This is why animation and comics studios relied on light tables for decades.7 The catch for painters is the surface: a stretched cotton or linen canvas is far too opaque and thick to let light through. Find the ratio first
Divide the canvas width by the drawing width. If your drawing is 8 inches wide and the canvas is 24 inches wide, the ratio is 24 ÷ 8 = 3. Everything scales by 3: a 1-inch cell on the drawing becomes a 3-inch cell on the canvas, and a feature that sits 2 inches from the left edge of the drawing sits 6 inches from the left edge of the canvas. Match the aspect ratio, or crop deliberately

Keeping proportions accurate through the transfer
The whole reason to transfer rather than redraw is to preserve the proportions you already resolved. Yet proportions still slip during transfer, and almost always for the same handful of reasons. Guarding against them is what separates a faithful enlargement from a near-miss.
Check against landmarks, not the whole picture
The eye is poor at judging a whole image at once and good at comparing two nearby points. For oil or acrylic, a thin coat of clear medium or a light, quick block-in of local colour over the outline fixes it in place so subsequent layers do not disturb it. Can I transfer a drawing to canvas without redrawing it?
Yes — that is the whole point of transfer. Graphite transfer paper and light tables copy a same-size drawing directly; the grid method, projectors, and AR let you copy it at a new size without redrawing freehand. In every case the design is already resolved, so you are copying, not re-inventing.
What grid size should I use to transfer a portrait?
Use enough cells that no single feature — an eye, the mouth, the jaw — spans more than one or two squares. For a head, a four-by-five grid is usually plenty. Adjust the density live in the free tool until each cell holds one clear feature; that is the right setting.
Do I need a projector to transfer a large drawing?
No. The grid method enlarges to any ratio with nothing but a ruler and pencil, and for large or odd canvases an AR app scales the drawing up through a phone camera. Projectors are useful but expensive and demand a dark room and careful squaring; many artists never need one.
Will a light table work for transferring to canvas?
Only for small, thin surfaces. A light table needs light to pass through the top layer, and a stretched cotton or linen canvas is far too opaque. It works on thin primed paper, canvas paper, a lightweight panel, or acetate at the same size — for a standard stretched canvas, use the grid, transfer paper, a projector, or AR instead.
How do I keep proportions accurate while transferring?
Check landmark to landmark against the grid rather than judging the whole image, transfer the biggest shapes first and confirm them before any detail, and step back constantly to compare the enlarged drawing against the original at arm's length. The grid gives you the relationships pre-measured; your job is to keep comparing.
Should I seal the transfer before painting?
For oil or acrylic, yes — a thin coat of clear medium or a light block-in fixes the light graphite guide so later layers do not smear it. For watercolour, do not try to seal it; instead keep the pencil so faint it reads only to you, because heavy graphite shows through transparent washes permanently.
