What is a golden triangle composition?

The golden triangle generator is a free browser tool that draws the diagonal composition overlay over any photograph or blank canvas. The construction is three lines: one corner-to-corner diagonal, and one perpendicular dropped onto it from each of the two remaining corners. What the Golden Triangle Generator does

Right angles, actually right

The two shorter lines meet the diagonal at exactly ninety degrees, computed as perpendicular feet. Sketched by eye that angle is approximate, and the power points — which are the entire point of the overlay — move with the error.

Two points, not four

Rule of thirds gives four symmetrical intersections and no direction. This gives two, on a line, with a direction of travel between them — which is what a diagonal subject actually needs.

How a golden triangle composition works — Three lines, two points, and the reason the name is only true on one aspect ratio

The golden triangle is taught, among the 82 composition overlays, as a golden-ratio composition rule. It is not one — except on exactly one shape of frame, where it becomes one precisely. That is a more interesting fact than the version usually printed, and it changes when you should reach for it.

The construction is three lines. Draw a diagonal from one corner of the frame to the opposite corner. From each of the two remaining corners, drop a line onto that diagonal so it meets at a right angle. That is the whole thing: one long line, two short ones, four triangles.

The two points where the perpendiculars land on the diagonal are what the overlay is for. They sit off-centre, on a line with a direction, and they are the placements the construction recommends: main subject on one, counterweight on the other, and the diagonal carrying the eye between them.

It is a diagonal with two anchors on it. Everything the rule claims beyond that is arithmetic that only works on one frame.

Where the golden ratio actually enters

The two perpendicular feet cut the diagonal into three segments. Call the frame's aspect ratio r — width over height. The two outer segments are equal, and the middle segment is longer than each of them by a factor of exactly r² − 1.

Every line here is in tension along its own length and nowhere else, which is why rigging reads as pure direction. Diagonal composition borrows that: a line that goes somewhere beats a line that merely divides.

On a 3:2 frame that factor is 1.25. On 16:9 it is 2.16. On a square it is zero — the two perpendiculars land on the same point at the centre and the construction collapses. And on a golden rectangle, where r = φ, it is φ, because φ² − 1 = φ. The middle segment is exactly 1.618 times each outer one, and the golden triangle finally deserves its name.

That is the whole of the golden ratio's involvement, and it is real but conditional. Shoot 3:2 and you are using a diagonal-and-perpendiculars construction with no φ in it anywhere. This is worth saying plainly because the usual presentation implies the ratio is present at every aspect, which would be easy to check and is not true.

Which does not make it a worse tool

The construction earns its place for a reason that has nothing to do with proportion: it is the only common overlay built around a diagonal, and a great many subjects are diagonal. A staircase, a reclining figure, a road, a wing, a coastline — none of these are served by a rectangular grid, and all of them have a direction that a diagonal either agrees with or fights.

The perpendiculars are what turn the diagonal from a line into a composition. A bare diagonal tells you where the movement is; the two feet tell you where along it to put things, and the right angle is what makes those positions feel anchored rather than arbitrary.

Orientation is the whole technique

There are two constructions, mirror images of each other: the main diagonal running bottom-left to top-right, or top-left to bottom-right. In a language read left to right, the first reads as ascending and optimistic and the second as descending — the same distinction the baroque and sinister diagonals are named for.

Match it to the subject. A figure leaning one way against a diagonal running the other produces a frame that feels obscurely wrong, and no amount of adjusting the placement will fix it, because the problem is that the construction and the content disagree about which way the picture goes. Flipping the overlay is one control and it is the first thing to get right.

How it sits against the rule of thirds

Thirds is symmetrical, undirected and gives four equivalent points. The golden triangle is asymmetrical, directional and gives two. They are not competing versions of the same idea; they answer different questions, and a static subject wants the first while a moving one wants the second.

They also disagree usefully. The power points are not at the thirds intersections — on a 3:2 frame they sit closer to the centre of the diagonal than the thirds points do, which is worth checking against the rule of thirds tool on the same image, or against the diagonal method generator, which places its points differently again. When a composition looks balanced on thirds but feels inert, testing it against the diagonal often shows you why: there is a direction in the picture that the symmetrical grid had no way to notice.

When the subject is diagonal but not corner-to-corner

The construction assumes the diagonal runs corner to corner, and plenty of subjects do not. A staircase crossing two thirds of the frame, a rooftop line that starts partway up the edge — these have a direction the overlay agrees with in spirit and misses in fact.

The golden triangle overlay page works through painted examples, beside the rest of the composition category. The overlay carries its own transform, so rotate and scale the whole construction until the main diagonal lies along the subject. The two perpendiculars rotate with it and stay perpendicular, because they are computed once and then the entire figure is moved — so the right angles, and therefore the power points, survive intact. What you lose is the relationship to the frame's corners; what you gain is a pair of anchors on the line the picture actually has. That trade is usually worth making, and it is the reason a construction with its own transform is more useful than a fixed guide burned into a viewfinder.

Using it on a photograph you already have

Load the frame, flip the diagonal to match the subject, turn the dots on. Then look at what is actually near them. If nothing is, the question is whether a crop would put something there — and because the overlay has its own transform you can drag and scale it to test that directly rather than cropping speculatively.

Then check the four triangles. The construction divides the frame into four, and how you have filled them is a fair description of the composition's balance: one heavy and three empty reads as dramatic, two and two as stable, and all four equally busy as a picture without a subject.

The geometry

What lines does the golden triangle actually draw?

Where is the golden ratio in it?

Only on a golden rectangle. The two feet cut the diagonal into three segments, and the middle one is longer than each outer one by a factor of r² − 1, where r is the aspect ratio. That factor is 1.25 on a 3:2 frame and 2.16 on 16:9 — and exactly φ when r = φ, because φ² − 1 = φ. On any other shape of frame the construction contains no golden ratio at all.

So is the name wrong?

On most frames, yes, and it is better to know that than to repeat it. The construction is still worth using — it is the only common overlay built around a diagonal, and a great many subjects are diagonal. Just do not reach for it because you want φ in the picture, unless you are actually shooting a golden rectangle.

Why are there two orientations?

Because a diagonal construction is directional. The main diagonal can run from bottom-left to top-right or from top-left to bottom-right, and it should agree with the way your subject runs. A construction fighting the content produces a frame that feels wrong in a way no amount of repositioning will fix.

What happens on a square canvas?

The construction collapses. Both perpendiculars land on the same point at the centre, because r² − 1 is zero when r is 1. That is mathematically correct and practically useless, which is a reasonable signal that a square frame wants a different overlay.

Is this the same as the golden triangle in geometry?

No. Two different figures share the name, which is where the confusion comes from. The geometric golden triangle is an isosceles triangle with angles of 36, 72 and 72 degrees, which comes out of the pentagon and does involve φ directly. This is a photographic composition rule that happens to share the name.

Can I use it on a painting in progress?

Yes, and photographing the work and laying the construction over it is one of the better uses. The four triangles the lines cut the frame into are a fair summary of the composition's balance, and that reads more clearly on a photograph than on the easel.

Using it

How do I decide which of the two orientations to use?

Let the picture decide. Rotate the overlay so its main diagonal runs with the dominant line already in the photograph — a road, a shoulder, a horizon edge — and see whether the two perpendiculars then land on anything. If neither orientation agrees, the picture is not built on a diagonal.

Should I show the intersection points?

While placing, yes; while judging, no. The three lines give you the structure and the two crossings give you the placement targets, and once you have decided which crossing your subject sits on, the dots are two more marks on the picture.

Export and print

Can I export it as an SVG?

Yes. Three straight lines and two dots export cleanly as vector, which is what you want for printing a guide at working size or plotting it. Raster export goes to 600 DPI, sized from the paper format you picked.

Can I print it as an overlay for prints?

Export the lines alone at your print proportion and put it on acetate — three lines is light enough to lay over a contact sheet and compare several frames quickly, which is awkward to do one file at a time on screen.

Does the perpendicular stay exact when exported?

In SVG, yes — the perpendiculars are computed from the diagonal, so a vector file holds the right angle exactly at any size. A raster is exact in geometry and stair-stepped in pixels, which only shows at large print sizes.

Choosing a grid

How is this different from the rule of thirds?

Thirds is symmetrical, undirected and offers four equivalent points. This is asymmetrical, directional and offers two, on a line, with the diagonal carrying the eye between them. Static subjects tend to answer better to thirds and moving ones to the diagonal.

Is the name actually accurate?

Not really, and it is worth saying. There is no golden ratio in the construction — it is a diagonal with two perpendiculars dropped onto it, which divides the frame into triangles of related but not φ-related areas. The name is conventional rather than descriptive.

Practical matters

Does my photo get uploaded?

Which subjects suit it?

Anything with a dominant diagonal: a staircase, a receding road, a reclining figure, a landscape with a strong slope. On a subject organised horizontally and vertically it will find nothing, which is a fair answer rather than a failure.
