Transfer a design onto a cake with AR
A single hands-on session for cake decorators and baking students. Learners take a flat design — a name, a monogram, a character silhouette — lock it over a fondant plaque or a crusted iced cake through the phone camera, then scribe the outline with a food-safe tool before filling it by hand. The lesson keeps two ideas separate: the free browser grid tool for planning proportions, and the paid AR app for holding the outline steady on a real, edible surface.
Learning objectives
By the end of the session, learners will:
- Choose a design that transfers cleanly to a curved or flat edible surface, and simplify it to a scribeable outline
- Prepare a fondant plaque or a crusted buttercream surface so an outline can be marked without smearing
- Lock a reference image over the cake surface in AR and keep it registered while the phone is held steady

Food-safety note
- Read firstOnly ever mark an edible surface with tools sold as food-safe: a clean cake scribe or scriber needle, an edible-ink food marker, or edible food-colour gel on a clean brush. Never use graphite pencils, ballpoint or permanent markers, carbon or transfer paper, or a craft stylus on anything that will be eaten.
- HygieneWash hands and sanitise all tools before contact with food. Keep the phone and any non-food equipment clear of the cake surface — the phone provides the AR outline from above and does not touch the cake.
- AllergensCheck that edible markers and colours are free of allergens relevant to the intended eater, and follow the manufacturer's food-use instructions and local food-handling rules.
Materials
- A smartphone or tablet running the Grid Maker Pro AR app, plus a phone stand or a steady pair of hands to hold the outline in place
- A prepared surface: a rolled fondant plaque set firm, or a cake with a crusted buttercream or fondant finish
- A food-safe cake scribe or scriber needle, and an edible-ink food marker as an alternative or backup
- Edible food-colour gels, clean brushes, and piping bags for filling once the outline is scribed
- A simple reference design per learner — a name, a monogram, or a bold character silhouette works best for a first try

Lesson sequence
Outline a design onto the cake and fill it
45 minutesShow two versions of the same lettered cake: one freehanded and slightly crooked, one cleanly outlined first. Ask what makes the second one read as steady. Name the usual answers — a pattern, a projector, a pin-prick pouncing transfer — as real methods decorators have used for years. Then introduce the plan: the free browser grid tool for laying out where the design should sit, and the AR app for holding that design over the cake while it is traced. The free web tool stays free and runs in the browser; the AR app is the separate paid add-on that does the one thing a browser cannot — pin an outline onto a real, edible surface through the camera.
- (4 min) Learners prepare the surface: roll and firm a fondant plaque, or let a buttercream finish crust so an outline will not smear. Simplify the chosen design down to the main shapes that need a guide line — a busy image is trimmed to the few edges that matter.
- (6 min) Open the design in the AR app and lock it over the cake surface through the phone camera, positioned on a stand or held steady from above. Check the alignment against the layout planned earlier in the browser grid tool, so the motif sits centred and true before any mark is made.
- (10 min) The core move: following the locked AR outline, learners scribe the main shapes with a food-safe scribe or edible marker only. Work outline first — enter and leave each shape cleanly — and resist detailing until the whole outline is down.
- (5 min) Fill and detail by hand: piping, edible gels, and brushwork bring the outline to life. The AR guide has done its job as soon as the shapes are placed correctly.
- (2 min) Quick check: lift the phone away and read the cake on its own. If a line looks off, it is far easier to correct while the fill is still light.
