Camera lucida

An optical drawing instrument, patented by William Hyde Wollaston in 1806, that uses a prism to superimpose a virtual image of the subject onto the drawing surface so the artist can trace its outlines by eye.

What it is

A camera lucida is a small prism held on an adjustable arm above the drawing paper. When the artist looks down through the prism at the correct angle, the eye receives light from the subject in front and light from the paper below at the same time, and the brain fuses them: the subject appears to lie on the paper as a faint, ghostly image. The artist then traces the apparent outlines with a pencil.

Crucially, the camera lucida casts no light and projects nothing — the image exists only in the viewer's eye, which is why it works in full daylight where a projector would not. This makes it the optical ancestor of AR tracing, which produces the same "image lying on the surface" effect electronically. Its weakness is that the virtual image is fragile: a slight head movement shifts it, so it demands a steady eye and patient registration.

Etymology

The Latin name means "light chamber," coined as a deliberate counterpart to the older camera obscura ("dark chamber"). William Hyde Wollaston, an English chemist and physicist, was granted British patent No. 2993 for the device in 1806 and gave it the name.1 Wollaston's prism design is the form still meant by the term, though the underlying optical principle had been described earlier by Johannes Kepler.

Examples in use

Nineteenth-century naturalists and travel artists used the camera lucida to record landscapes and specimens accurately in the field; Captain Basil Hall's 1820s North American sketches are a documented example.2 In Secret Knowledge (2001), David Hockney argued that earlier masters used optical aids of this family to achieve their accuracy, reopening a long debate about drawing and the "honest eye."3 The instrument was revived for contemporary artists as the NeoLucida, a low-cost reissue funded on Kickstarter by Pablo Garcia and Golan Levin in 2013.
